Herring Hall Marvin Safe Co Serial Numbers

Apr 07, 2014 I have recently become the owner of a 2 ton concrete-lined Herring HAll Marvin Safe measuring approximately 25.5' deep, 27.5' wide and 43' tall. This unwieldy bastard was open when I came across it and like a dumb ass, I yanked the crank.

It's a Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company vault out of Hamilton, Ohio. Looks like a group 2 lock with three wheels based on the age. That means it will be a three number combination. Here is how to dial in the three numbers:.Turn the dial 4 times to the left.
Pass the number three times and stop on it the fourth time.).Turn the dial 3 times to the right. Pass the number two times and stop on it the third time.).Turn the dial 2 times to the left. Pass the number once and stop on it the second time.)Then, turn the dial slowly to the right until it stops (if the three numbers are correct) between the numbers 90 and 100.(If the lock is from the 1920s or 1930s, the last step, instead, would be to turn the dial to the right and stop on 0 and then turn the handle.)Open the door.Note: this is not at all like the process for a Master combination lock on a school locker. The good news is that it's possible to crack this safe without drilling by manipulating the combination.
The bad news is that it is too complicated to explain in one post. The other good news is that with a three digit combination, there is a very good chance that it was a date. I would suggest (knowing you are in the U.S.A.) that you try 1-12 for the first number (month), 1-31 for the second number (day) and 1-30 for the third number (year at the beginning of the century. You could also add 80-99 to this list afterwards incase they were really old). This reduces your keyspace from 1,000,000 combinations to under 20,000.

Also keep in mind that dates can be written as yy-mm-dd in some circles. Find out about the previous owners; in military, academic, scientific, industrial, or governmental circles, yy-mm-dd is more likely in the U.S.A. Otherwise, mm-dd-yy is more likely. If I were you, I would try all permutations of 1-12 for each number. That gives you 1728 combinations and a reasonable chance of getting a date for someone born between 1901 and 1912 (they would be in their 30s to 50s around the time the vault was last opened). If that doesn't work, you'll want to open it up to 31 days and more years.January 1, 1901January 1, 1902.December 12, 1912By the way, both Jay P.
Graves (original owner until 1936) and C.E. And Lorraine Marr (subsequent owners until 1962) were mining tycoons and mining investors. There could be some neat stuff behind that door! It could also be a bunch of grocery receipts and food orders since the Marrs owned hundreds of grocery stores.;)The Marrs bought Waikiki in 1936C.E.
Marr died in 1946Could be relevant dates?Try 25-0-25 and 50-25-50 too.Good luck. Wish I were there to give it a shot.
